5 inspiring podcasts for ambitious career women

Podcasts

Podcasts – if you’re not already into them, it’s time you gave them a shot.

Listening to podcasts is one of the best ways to absorb information on the go – tune in while commuting, cleaning the house or when you fancy a bit of quiet time on the couch on a Sunday afternoon.

I listen to a range of podcasts – I’ve tuned into cult shows like Serial, S-Town and This American Life – but I often find myself turning to shows that offer sound guidance on work, career progression and running a business.

So, here (in no particular order) are five of my favourite podcasts for finding inspiration and valuable advice about business and career.

At home with...

1. At Home With…

British bloggers Lily Pebbles and Anna Newton have teamed up to produce a podcast that is great for those who want an insight into the professional lives of successful women.

In At Home With…, the duo visit the homes of people they admire to chat about their lives, career, home and fashion favourites.

There are some great sections in the podcasts about the professional lives of the people interviewed, including career tips and advice for navigating the working world.

Start with the debut episode – an interview with Jo Elvin, editor-in-chief of iconic magazine Glamour UK. Elvin imparts some valuable career advice including how she had to work her way up to her editor role, why focusing on where you want to be shouldn’t stop you from doing a good job now, and that time she got fired from a job and the impact it had on her career.

Start up podcast

2. StartUp

This podcast is great for those who want an insight into the world of start-ups and what it really takes to get a business off the ground.

In the first season of StartUp, the podcast documents the journey of how Gimlet Media (the company that produces StartUp) began.

It covers everything from how co-founder Alex Blumberg started the business to how he botched his pitch to a Silicon Valley billionaire, deciding on how to share equity within the business, choosing a name for the company, and the challenges faced when growing and a scaling the business.

If you’re looking for a more female-centric perspective on the process of starting a business, tune into the second season – it follows the journey of how two women started a unique online dating business and shares the pitfalls and learnings of their experience.

Listen to StartUp on Apple Podcasts, or Spotify.

The Lively Show

3. The Lively Show

While Jess Lively’s podcast has shifted to more of a focus on wellbeing, intention and intuition (all very woo woo, but in a practical and good way), many of her earlier episodes featured interviews with leading business women.

Search The Lively Show for interviews with Luxy Hair co-founder Mimi Ikonn, Pinch of Yum blogger Lindsay Ostram and renowned author Elizabeth Gilbert. Each of these women share an insight into their personal and professional lives, including some important lessons they’ve learned during their career.

Listen on Apple Podcasts or Stitcher for Android.

Brand Newsroom

4. Brand Newsroom

This podcast is valuable for anyone working in media, public relations or marketing.

Produced by Australian company Lush Digital, Brand Newsroom focuses primarily on discussions about branded journalism and content marketing, and follows new trends and developments in this sector.

Each podcast offers a passionate conversation, presented by James Lush, Nic Hayes and Sarah Mitchell, and is crucial for women working in communications.

Girlboss radio

5. Girlboss Radio

This podcast is brought to you by Sophia Amoruso, founder of Nasty Gal and author of #Girlboss.

Girlboss Radio features interviews with successful girlbosses who have made their mark in creative, cultural and business ventures.

Leading women like actress Charlize Theron, editor-in-chief of Marie Claire USA Anne Fulenwider and author Sloane Crosley are featured on the podcast and share solid advice about the lessons they’ve learned in their professional lives.

Girlboss Radio is ideal for listeners who want an insight into a range of creative professions – magazine editors, writers, musicians, artists and comedians all feature on the podcast.
