The rise of the portfolio career and how to build one without burning out

The rise of the portfolio career and how to build one without burning out

Many professionals feel stuck or burnt out in their jobs, especially those with many interests. Fortunately, there is a way to blend one’s passions, skills and financial needs.

The modern Australian career woman is no longer climbing the corporate ladder. A portfolio career is a modern approach to work where professionals take ownership of their careers and create a more dynamic work system.

Here is how you can build one that meets your professional goals while protecting your mental health.

What is a portfolio career?

A portfolio career is a collection of small businesses, consulting and passion projects that can be done in your industry, whether that’s finance, marketing or tech. Think of it like a financial portfolio where diversifying is the golden rule.

In 2025, women made up 63.5 per cent of the workforce in Australia, but despite these impressive numbers, many faced burnout, feeling overworked and under-recognised. To combat the challenges of a traditional 9-5, women are turning to portfolio careers.

Modern Australian women are attracted to the flexibility and autonomy of portfolio careers. In a survey, about 42 per cent of respondents say work-related stress interferes with their daily lives. Having full control over your schedule is a luxury many professionals aspire to have. It also allows you to explore your passions further. Unlike having a full-time job and a passion project on the side, portfolio careers are a thoughtful layering of your diverse skills to generate income across markets.

Having a portfolio career with a broad range of skills and experience helps future-proof your demand in a rapidly evolving job market. It showcases your adaptability and resilience regarding change.

Your 3-step guide to strategically building your portfolio career

Here’s a quick guide on how you can build your own portfolio career based on your current resume and skills.

1. Audit your assets

Create three categories of your professional skills. The first one is your bankable skills or what you get paid for now. The second category is the things you love doing, and the third is your knowledge gaps or what you need to learn.

Additionally, examine your finances. In 2022, the pay gap was around 13.8 per cent between male and female professionals. How much will you need for your main career as you build other income streams? Be brutal when cutting unnecessary expenses. Think of your savings as an investment for your career flexibility.

2. Design your ideal mix

Designate an anchor that serves as your main focus. This will help you have financial stability in challenging times. Then consider your other skills and how you can apply them across different aspects of a layered career. Examples are consulting sessions and a creative project.

The mix will be incredibly different for each person due to differences in skills, interests and goals. An example of a mix can be a part-time corporate role with freelance photography services and a blog.

3. Start small and test the waters

Do not quit a job abruptly once you start earning income from your side hustle. Test its viability and enjoyment first before fully committing. Be strategic when pitching your work. Position yourself as a communications strategist and a certified nutritionist, for example.

How to manage it all without burning out

The most challenging thing about portfolio careers is the risk of burnout. After all, multitasking lowers productivity by 40 per cent and can lead to burnout. When not handled properly, you can risk your career and the enjoyment of your passions altogether. Protecting your energy should be your number one priority, since it dictates how much you can pour into your passion. Learn to set boundaries and say no.

A powerful tool is time-blocking. You dedicate a specific and bounded time to each workstream. You should also prioritise and add time blocks for rest, exercise and social connection. These factors are important for self-care. Also, prevent perfectionism from stealing time and joy away from your projects. Instead, embrace the concept of ‘good enough’ to help alleviate your worries and stress. Focus on what truly matters for each project.

Lastly, in a portfolio career, you will be the one to build your own network of mentors, peers and friends. They are important for progressing your knowledge and skills in this non-traditional career path.

Crafting a career that is uniquely yours

A portfolio career can help build a future of flexibility, fulfilment and a sense of accomplishment. Start by auditing your skill sets based on your main goals and skills, your passions and your knowledge gap. Then, design your ideal system and start small.

Lastly, protect your mental health and energy to avoid burnout. The goal is a long-lasting career that truly reflects who you want to become.
